Adult Skill Development

The goal of UCP Chicago's adult services is to develop options for adults with severe disabilities so they may exercise as fully as possible their right to participate in the community of their choice.

UCP's adult programs stimulate participation and skill development through structured learning and provide support through individual and group counseling. Always, the aim is to determine and fully realize the physical, social and intellectual potential of each participant.

Each individual, age 18 or older, is accepted into the program based on an initial evaluation of his/her needs and personal goals and desires, from which an Individual Service Plan (ISP) is developed. The ISP outlines specific, attainable goals for the participant, around which his/her daily activities are scheduled. Goals, action steps, and progress are evaluated every six months and modified as needed.

Round-trip bus transportation is provided between each participant's home and the program site.

For more information about UCP Chicago's programs for adults, please contact UCP Executive Vice President Peg Childs, 708.444.8460, ext. 228, or e-mail pchilds@ucpnet.org.

  Daily Living Skills

With acquisition of sufficient daily living skill, adults with disabilities may gain a good measure of independent functioning at home. UCP adult service consumers learn and practice skills related to cooking, cleaning and other daily tasks in model kitchens, laundries and other home-like settings.

Other skills, such as personal care (hygiene, grooming, toileting) and managing money are included in this program. Adult service consumers also may receive basic education in reading comprehension, vocabulary and math.

  Assistive Technology & Therapy
Adult service consumers gain familiarity and experience with various assistive technology devices, from environment control switches to communication devices and adapted computers. Service consumers are encouraged to learn and use technologies, which serve their individual needs. Through this phase of the program, participants gain confidence and a sense of mastery and independence. Depending on the adult consumer's needs, a number of different therapists and technology specialists may work with him/her to develop coordination and communication ability.

  Vocational skills

UCP engages adult service consumers in work, such as product packaging, obtained on contract from private businesses. These work experiences give program participants vocational practice and the experience of independently earning a small income.
