UCP of Greater Chicago promotes access to life-enhancing
assistive technology through its Infinitec project. Infinitec aims
to advance the independence of people with disabilities and support
their inclusion in the workplace, at school, and in the community.
Achievement of these goals may be supported by applying technology
to the tasks of everyday life. One key to Infinitec's success is
the creation of mutually supportive partnerships.
At
Infinitec offers assistive
technology training programs for disability-assistance professionals,
parents of children with disabilities, teachers, and other caregivers.
Upon request, Infinitec also develops customized training programs

Many assistive technology programs and services are offered through
Infinitec satellites. For more information, see the next section

Infinitec West is an independent, non-profit organization
created through a partnership between United Cerebral Palsy of
Greater Chicago and Easter Seals DuPage. Programs are created
and provided in collaboration with other DuPage County human service
agencies and school districts. Infinitec West provides: assistive
technology assessment and consultation; equipment demonstrations
and displays; and information services, training classes, and
more.

Infinitec
DuPage includes 31 DuPage County school districts that receive Infinitec
assistive technology information and services for their students
and staffs. In Fall 2001, SASED (School Association of Special Education
in DuPage County), which includes 44 school districts, will join
this coalition
Infinitec
North administers a coalition of 88 school districts in the LICA,
N.S.S.E.D. and SEDOL special education cooperatives, and in Waukegan.
The purpose of the coalition is to provide assistive technology
information, training, and services to the students and staffs of
the member districts. N.S.S.E.D. (Northern Suburban Special Education
District), Highland Park, is donating land on which Infinitec/UCP
Chicago will construct a new building. Plans call for the building
to house both a child-care center for infants and pre-schoolers
to age 5--20 percent of whom will be children with disabilities--and
an assistive technology services center.
Infinitec
Southwest provides assistive technology information, training and
services to a coalition of 92 school districts in an area stretching
southward from suburban Hickory Hills to Kankakee, and westward
through Joliet to LaSalle and Ottawa. Infinitec Southwest operates
equipment loan and exchange programs, connects members with assistive
technology service providers, and offers assistive technology information,
training, and education.
Infinitec Midstate provides assistive technology
information, training, and services to 90 Illinois school districts
outside the Chicago area and includes representation from Illinois
State University, Bloomington.
In
addition, Infinitec Midstate, in partnership with Peoria Easter
Seal-UCP, CWBT (Community Workshop Training Project), and PARC
(Peoria Association for Retarded Citizens), provides assistive
technology programs and services to children from birth to age
three and to adults. Thanks to grants from Ameritech, Ill. Dept.
of Human Services, and Tellabs, an equipment loan program soon
will serve adults and pre-schoolers with disabilities in the mid-state
area. ICCDD (Ill, Council for Citizens with Developmental Disabilities)
also provided funding to pilot this interagency technology service
model.
Infinitec Inc. is a U.S. non-profit corporation
formed to help people with disabilities and their families access
assistive technology at an affordable cost. Infinitec Inc.
is a joint effort of UCP of Greater Chicago and the national United
Cerebral Palsy (UCP) organization, Washington, D.C.
Through its comprehensive Web site, www.infinitec.org,
Infinitec Inc. provides people all over the world with information
about assistive technology. The Web site emphasize practical,
everyday applications of technology in the lives of people with
disabilities. Every quarter, the site features a new special section
highlighting a particular realm in which technology facilitates
participation by people with disabilities. (travel, water sports,
cooking and kitchen design, driving, etc.).
Another special feature of Infinitec's Web site is a
guide to researching assistive technology on the Internet and
through other sources, www.infinitec.org/learn/.
The guide includes an extensive list of links to other assistive
technology sites.
Infinitec Inc. also sponsors an annual scholarship award for
college-bound students with disabilities who use assistive technology.The
award is co-sponsored the the Foundation for Exceptional Children.
