UCP’s Ramp Up Foundation began in 2001 thanks in part to a grant from the Coleman Foundation. It has grown and expanded because of valuable partnerships with the Illinois Housing Development Authority, the Department of Children and Family Services, the Chicago Department of Housing, and funding grants from numerous Chicago-based foundations including the Guthman Foundation, the Dr. Scholl Foundation, Northern Trust, the Boeing Employee Fund, and others. These funding partners have enabled Ramp Up to expand its ramp construction services to home modifications for eligible persons with disabilities.

The goal of the program is to provide home access to eligible people with disabilities who own their own residences but are otherwise unable to afford the cost of needed modifications. Many people with disabilities lack the resources to purchase home ramps and do basic home modifications themselves. As a result, they are trapped in their own homes. The Ramp Up Foundation believes children and adults with mobility and physical disabilities have a right to safe, easy access, particularly into and out of their homes. It costs at least $3800 to build a complete home ramp from start to finish and home modifications usually cost much more than that. Therefore, Ramp Up encourages donors to make contributions to support this worthy cause.
